Quick Tips

  • Have a detailed map that shows roads and land ownership
  • Let optics cover the ground for you
  • Plan to hunt all or as much of the season as possible

On The Ground

Between the Great Salt Lake and Utah Lake to the south, this unit features two mountain ranges separated by a desert valley with wetlands. Healthy herds of mule deer live in varied terrain that is largely accessible to the public.

Hunters will see a lot of deer in this unit with the potential to see some trophy sized bucks. Most land here has good public access.

Terrain

With more than 6,000 feet of elevation change, terrain is varied. Valleys consist of desert flats and rolling land that rise to foothills. The Oquirrh and Stansbury Mountains have peaks that are more than 10,000 above sea level.

  • Roughly 1,510 square miles

  • 35% public land

  • Elevations range from 4,268 - 10,326 feet

Low elevations in this unit have dry, desert rolling hills and flats. Some grass, prickly-pear cactus and sagebrush with scattered pinyon pines and juniper trees can be found. Middle elevations are covered in ponderosa pines and oak brush, while sagebrush continues through this elevation as well. Higher elevations have scattered aspen groves with steep slopes covered in conifer forests.

Some of the unit is part of the Wasatch National Forest with the Deseret Wilderness, or desert land managed by the BLM, giving good public access. There are also large pieces of private land mixed throughout the unit. There is road access on all sides of the unit with well-maintained dirt roads leading to less-maintained 4-wheel-drive roads and ATV trails. Highway 36 and 73 run through the middle of the unit and provide access to several branch roads. Tooele Army Depot and Camp Williams are closed for hunting.

  • ATVs recommended

  • 4-wheel-drive recommended

Most hunters camp along roads. There are several locations that have good, flat camping locations for travel trailers or tents. There are campgrounds in North and South Willow Canyons, Grantsville Reservoir, Middle Canyon, Settlement Canyon, and Ophir Canyon that are open to the public. There are cities and towns all over the unit that have lodging.

  • Arrive early for better camping locations

  • Expect to camp near other hunters
