On The Ground

This unit has healthy herds of mule deer and great scenery. With good public access and moderate terrain, this is a good area to hunt bucks.

Great public access can be found here and with the later season dates, hunters can be in for a fun hunt.

Terrain

A small unit in the central part of the state, this unit features rolling ridges at high elevations and steep creek drainages. Most of the ridges are heavily forested with conifers and aspens, breaking into large meadows that typically have a spring or a lake in them. Many mountainous peaks exist above 11,000 ft with valleys down around 5,000 ft. Dry rolling hills and desert flats comprise terrain below 6,000 feet.

  • Roughly 682 square miles

  • 83% public land

  • Elevations from 5,200-11,500 feet

Lowlands are covered with grass, prickly pear cactus and sagebrush along with scattered pinyon pines and juniper trees. Middle-elevation land is covered with conifers, oak brush and sagebrush. High mountains and ridges have aspens with steep slopes covered in conifer forests.

Much of the unit is part of the Fishlake National Forest or desert land managed by the BLM, giving great public access. Several well-maintained dirt or gravel roads lead to four-wheel-drive roads and ATV trails that reach most of the unit. Main routes start from Interstate 70 in the north and Highway 24 in the west.

  • ATVs are recommended

  • Four-wheel-drive vehicles are recommended

Most hunters camp along roads, there are several locations that have good flat camping locations for travel trailers or tents. There are a couple of designated campgrounds open to the public. Loa and Salina are the nearest towns and some offer lodging, but it’s limited.

  • Arrive early for better camping locations

  • Expect to camp near other hunters
