On The Ground

Once labeled as one of Utah’s legendary units, a struggling deer herd and limited public land make locating mature bucks a challenge. Each year a small percentage of hunters tag mature bucks. Recent wildfires burned much of the unit and new vegetation has begun to grow in the areas that were affected by the fire, these can be great starting locations.

Bucks can be found throughout the unit along the valley floor and in the mountainous areas. Hunters may need to travel to find secluded pockets of unpressured animals.

Terrain

Deer live throughout the area but are mostly found in the north on private land that borders the limited-entry unit, Fillmore, Oak Creek. Islands of pinyon/juniper and rolling hills to the south hold a fair number of deer.

  • Roughly 1,500 square miles

  • 60% public land

  • Elevations range from 4,500-6,500 feet

Lower elevations range from open desert with cactus to sage flats with pinyon/juniper stands. Sagebrush and pinyon/juniper are higher, and small aspen groves are found near the base of the Canyon Mountain Range.

Access in the north is limited by private land. The southern part of the unit is open, and public access is good. There is some tribal land down around Kanosh as well as some private land in the southern portion of the unit that hunters need to be aware of.

  • Carry well-marked maps or use a GPS with private land boundaries

  • Ask ranchers for access to private land

  • Hunters need four-wheel-drive vehicles and sturdy tires

  • ATVs are recommended

Hunters may camp on public land. Full services and motels are available in Delta. Limited services are in Lynndyl, Oak City, and Cove Fort. There are several established campgrounds within the unit that hunters can stay at also.
