A large unit with some excellent public hunting grounds. Topography and terrain vary greatly from east to west, along with a big elevation change. There is lodging near most hunting areas.
Good unit for early season deer hunting. Bucks are in all parts of the unit, but the high desert in the east holds more resident deer. Most deer are in the eastern side of the unit. High-elevation hunting is good in the west. Resident deer herds run throughout the unit.
The terrain varies greatly from east to west. West of Highway 143 has mountains, buttes and basins to 11,000 feet with steep hillsides and basins filled with aspens and conifers. The eastern part is high desert with moderately steep basins and bowls filled with pinyon, juniper, mahogany and ponderosa pine trees.
Mostly pinyon pines, junipers, mahoganies and sagebrush at lower to middle elevations, grassy meadow buttes can be found in the west. Willows grow wherever water is adequate. At higher elevations there are aspen mixed with large, thick conifer forests.
Plenty of public roads and four-wheel-drive trails can take you to a starting point in any part of the unit. Private land does not significantly impede access. Cedar Breaks National Monument in the west is closed to hunting.
Hatch has RV facilities and motels and is a good option for hunters who want to hunt in the high desert part of the unit. Hunters choosing to lodge near the western part can find RV parks and motel lodging in Panguitch and in the Panguitch Lake area.
