Quick Tips

  • Scout and learn the unit, it is big country
  • Have a detailed map that shows land ownership and road access
  • Plan to hunt as much of the season as possible
  • Get access to private land prior to hunting this unit
  • Good fishing in Pineview Reservoir

On The Ground

Located in the northern part of the state, this unit has some great moose hunting. With limited tag numbers and over a month to hunt, it can be considered a hunt of a lifetime for the hunter who draws the tag.

There is a lot of private land and a healthy herd of Shiras Moose that can be found here. A hunter willing to put in the time and seek private land permission will have the chance to see a bull moose.

Terrain

Leading out of the valley floor, the steep Bear River Mountain Range rises to rugged heights of 9,800 feet. Along the mountain range are creek drainages heading down to the rolling foothills.

  • Roughly 633 square miles

  • 26% public land

  • Elevations from 4,500-9,800 feet

Low elevations are irrigated farm land, sagebrush and oak brush. Continuing up through the middle elevations are oak brush, sage brush along with aspen, spruce and fir trees. The higher elevations have scattered aspen groves with the steep slopes covered in conifer forests. Many of the high basins are grassy with short sage brush.

Much of the area is covered by large private ranches, many do offer guided hunts or trespass permits for a fee. There is road access on all sides of the unit with well-maintained dirt roads leading to less-maintained 4-wheel- drive roads or ATV trails.

  • ATVs recommended

  • 4-wheel-drive recommended

A lot of hunters camp along roads, there are several locations that have good, flat camping areas for travel trailers or tents. There are a couple of designated campgrounds open to the public. There are a lot of cities and towns spread throughout the unit that offer lodging as well.

  • Arrive early for better camping locations
