Quick Tips

  • Bring fishing gear to enjoy excellent trout fishing
  • Many lakes and dozens of streams offer pan-size trout
  • If you draw a moose tag buy an elk tag, too
  • Many elk live in the Sheep Creek and Carter Creek drainages

On The Ground

Some big moose live in this unit and not only in the High Uintas Wilderness, but also in roaded, logged, private and public land just south of the Wyoming border.

Some huge moose large enough to qualify for Boone and Crockett Club listing live in this unit, but the area is so big and the animals are so scattered that most moose hunters usually take the first mature bull they see, and some even take immature bulls. Great hunting south of Sol Canyon and in the meadows north and south of Windy Ridge.

Terrain

This unit is the eastern part of the north slope of the High Uintas and includes wilderness areas as well as roaded and logged mountains. A lot of moose are found near roads and trails outside wilderness boundaries.

  • Roughly 622 square miles

  • 89% public land

  • Elevations from about 6,050 at Flaming Gorge Reservoir to more than 12,000 feet

Low elevations are cold desert brushlands, mostly sagebrush, with junipers, some pines and firs on ridges along with some creek bottoms. Middle elevations have creek drainages, hundreds of lakes, grassy meadows, willow flats and fairly flat mountains with hundreds of meadows and parks separated by dense conifer woods. High elevations have alpine meadows and slopes, spruce and other low bushes along with massive cliffs and rock fields and slides. Below the timber line at about 11,000 feet are large conifer forests with scattered meadows and creeks that can spread a quarter mile wide with willows and swampy muskeg.

Much of the area is designated wilderness, so you must walk or ride horses. A good access road a few miles east of McKinnon, Wyoming, heads toward Spirit Lake. Highway 44 south of Manila leads to the Sheep Creek Loop, and a maze of Forest Service roads provide excellent access to the Carter Creek tributaries.

  • Four-wheel-drives are recommended

  • Horseback hunters can access state ground on Corson Peak from Highway 43

  • Some terrain is flat and densely timbered, so carry a GPS and compass

Most hunters camp in unimproved campgrounds or along dirt roads. Inexpensive motels are available in Manila.

  • Be familiar with camping regulations in the wilderness area

  • Flaming Gorge Lodge in Dutch John rents rooms and has an RV and trailer park

  • Spirit Lake Lodge has rooms and cabins with woodstoves
