Quick Tips

  • Cell phone coverage ranges from zero to moderate
  • Outfitter on the east side of unit offers trespass/guided hunts on their property
  • Bear activity has been a problem in past, bear-proof all containers
  • Good spotting scope and binoculars
  • Take a fishing pole along for the numerous lakes and streams
  • Be prepared for drastic changes in weather

On The Ground

Although there is some private land, the majority of moose habitat is public land in this unit. This once-in-a-lifetime hunt can be a difficult one to find a mature bull due to low numbers. The hunt has very few bull tags available to residents. Non-residents are not eligible for any tags.

If a desired bull is located while scouting, he will likely remain in the same area during the early part of the season. This unit is not known for trophy bulls, however with dedicated scouting a respectable bull in the 35-40” range is possible.

Terrain

Northern areas of this unit hold moose in traditional mountain terrain with high peaks, valleys, meadows and snow banks on north slopes of peaks providing water throughout summer. The east side of unit has multiple ridges running north and south off of the Green River.

  • Roughly 1,669 square miles

  • 71% public land

  • Elevations from 5,500-13,000 feet

Wide variety of vegetation ranging from the lowest elevation up to the peaks. The dominant plants in lower areas are Wyoming Big sage, Gambel oak, and Mountain Mahogany. At middle elevations there is aspen mixed with Lodgepole pine transitioning into Engelmann spruce and Douglas fir at higher elevations.

Highway 191 travels north from Vernal through the center of the unit providing many access points. FR044, west of Highway 191 and east of The Lane Road will provide access to main moose areas in the Diamond Mountain area.

  • Four-wheel-drive recommended

  • Be aware of Utah/Colorado state line

  • Later in-season snow can be an issue on roads

  • Moderate ATV access

There are different options available for camping within the unit in National Forest or BLM campgrounds. A lot of hunters camp along roads to be closer to the different hunting areas. Vernal is the nearest town that offers lodging and services, but is a great distance from hunting areas.

  • Expect to camp near other hunters
