Quick Tips

  • Scout and learn the unit, its big country
  • Have a detailed map that shows road access
  • Plan to hunt all or as much of the season as possible
  • Fresh raspberry shakes in Garden City are outstanding
  • Good fishing in Bear Lake for a variety of fish

On The Ground

Located in the Northeastern corner of the state, this unit has some great habitat to grow mature Shiras bull moose. With limited tag numbers and over a month to hunt, it is a true hunt of a lifetime.

The lucky hunter that draws one of the tags for this unit will have a great hunt, but mature bull moose aren't easy to come by. A hunter willing to put the time in will have the chance to see a nice, mature bull.

Terrain

Leading out of the farm ground in Cache Valley the steep Bear River Mountain Range rises to its rugged heights. Along the mountain range are steep creek drainages leading down to the foothills rolling out of the valleys.

  • Roughly 1,833 square miles

  • 52% public land

  • Elevation from 4,500 feet to 10,000 feet

Low elevations are irrigated farm land, sage brush, and oak brush. Continuing up through the middle elevations are oak brush, sage brush with aspen, spruce and fir trees. The higher elevations have scattered aspen groves with the steep slopes covered in conifer forests. A lot of the high basins are grassy with short sage brush.

Much of the unit is part of the Cache National Forest, giving great public access. There is road access on all sides of the unit with well-maintained dirt roads leading to less-maintained 4-wheel drive roads or ATV trails. The Mount Naomi Wilderness is closed except to foot and horse traffic only.

  • ATVs recommended

  • 4-Wheel drive recommended

Most hunters camp along roads, there are several locations that have good, flat camping locations for travel trailers or tents. There are a couple of designated campgrounds open to the public. There are some large private ranches mixed in with the public land, getting hunting access to the private can be difficult. Logan is located at the south end of the unit and offers lodging and services.

  • Arrive early for better camping locations

  • Expect to camp near other hunters
