This small subunit is found in northeast Utah and lies along the Flaming Gorge Reservoir. The hunting area is fairly small but nearly all public and is home to some excellent elk habitat. Escaping pressure can be tough at times but hunters who are willing to keep after it can find success.
Escaping pressure can be difficult here but hunters who stay focused can find success.
This unit is primarily comprised of a large system of highcountry ridges to the south and descend quickly at they head north to the Flaming Gorge Reservoir. This high elevation areas are heavily timbered and provide excellent habitat for elk. The lower elevation areas north of highway 44 will still be heavily vegetated but will see a few pocket meadows making visibility slightly better.
This entire unit is heavily vegetated and provides excellent elk habitat. The southern end is more dense in vegetation and also see quite a bit more downfall. These can be excellent areas to escape most of the pressure but the hunting will be slow and tough. Large stands of pine and fir will be found here and can, at time, reduce visibility to under 50 yards. The areas north of Highway 44 will see less vegetation but will still force most hunters to resort to still hunting as opposed to glassing. Pine will still be largely dominant but pinyon juniper will grow along the shores of the reservoir.
This area is largely public and will give hunters plenty of options when it comes to access. The smaller overall size of the hunting area can concentrate hunters but the rougher terrain and vegetation cover will keep a large portion of the competition in close proximity to drivable roads. A good trail and road system provides a balanced amount of access into most of the areas but quite a few roadless areas can still be found.
There a few resort and lodges available for lodging though most hunters will opt to RV or truck camp. Backpack hunting may not be totally worth it due to the small size of the unit but it can cut down on travel times drastically due to the heavy downfall and heavy timber in some areas. Sporting good needs and groceries will need to be met prior to the hunt.
