This unit is found in northeast Utah and lies just northwest of the town of Vernal. Good hunting can be found here but this area will see high competition. Hunters will find lots of public hunting opportunities here making filling a tag very attainable.

Competition can be high here but during periods of good snow hunting can be good as elk herds migrate from the Uinta Mountains.

This area features steep terrain throughout the unit though most of these areas rarely exceed 1,500 feet in elevation change. The southern half of the unit is mostly open with very little vegetation cover while the northern half of the unit experiences very heavy tree cover and more terrain exaggeration.

The southern half of the unit is a typical makeup of high desert country with sage, native grasses, and periodic patches of pinyon-juniper. In the higher elevations to the north hunters will encounter large mature stands of pine, fir, and aspen. Timbered ridges will climb into the highest elevations where the terrain will largely level out into large box canyons with flat bottoms full of water and natural grasses. Glassing opportunities will be mostly non-existent in the high elevation areas.

With this area containing so many public land, hunters will find good opportunities when locating hunting areas. Many roads can be found on the lower sections to the south making for easy access into most areas. Most of the north half of the unit is roadless and can provide good opportunities for hunters who want to distance themselves from competition.

There are not any options for modern lodging found with the unit but the nearby town of Vernal can provide several choices. Sporting goods and groceries can also be purchased in Vernal.
