On The Ground

This unit is found in the south central portion of the state along the Arizona border. Most of the prime elk habitat will be found along the northern edges of the unit but elk can be spotted throughout the elevation ranges. This will be a tough hunt for a mature bull but the potentials are good.

Lower densities of elk will be found here in relation to area immediately north of the unit but some great potential can still be had.

Terrain

On the southern border there is Lake Powell, with a large stretch of desert and red slickrock canyon country leading up towards the Boulder and Escalante Mountains. Ridges climb steeply off the valley floor to elevations over 10,000 and provide commanding views of the the immediate areas. Off of the flat plateau top, are large steep timber covered canyons leading down to the desert floor.

  • Roughly 3,500 square miles

  • 97% public land

  • Elevations from 3,700-10,500 feet

The low elevations in this unit have dry, desert rolling hills and flats. They also contain some grass, prickly-pear cactus, and sagebrush with scattered pinyon pines and juniper trees. Middle elevations are covered in ponderosa pines, oak brush and the sagebrush continues throughout this elevation as well. Higher elevations have scattered aspen groves with steep slopes covered in conifer forests.

Much of the unit is part of the Dixie National Forest or desert land managed by the BLM, giving great public access. There is road access on all sides of the unit with well-maintained dirt roads leading to less-maintained four-wheel-drive roads or ATV trails.

Most hunters camp along roads, there are several locations that have good, flat camping locations for travel trailers or tents. There are a couple of designated campgrounds open to the public. Teasdale, Torrey, Boulder, Loa, and Escalante are the nearest towns, with some offering limited lodging and services.
