This smaller unit is found in Northern Utah along the Idaho Border. This unit is primarily composed of private lands but some stretches of public land can be found in the Wellsville Wilderness area in the southwest and the Clarkston Mountain area in the northwest. Good populations of elk can be found int he valley but hunting on public land can be crowded.
Hunters will find good elk numbers here but find hunting to be difficult on public land that is limited, usually steep, and covered with dense brush and trees.
Most of the lower elevation areas are comprised of river bottoms, agricultural lands, and urban development. Much of this ground is private and hunters will need to seek permission when hunting here. The higher elevation areas to the west will consist of steep, timbered-covered slopes that provide great habitat for elk.
Gambel oak brush is the most common cover along with sagebrush, maple brush, mountain mahogany, junipers, firs, aspen, spruce, and several species of pines. Most elk winter on the grassy pastures of Hardware Ranch Wildlife Management Area, which is in the northeastern corner of this unit as well as in the bordering South Cache Unit. Elk are fed hay there during harsh, snowy winters.
Most of this unit is private lands and hunters will need to seek permission to hunt these areas. The public lands found in the mountainous areas on the west side of the unit are rugged and remote but hunting pressure can be high.
Camping is allowed along public roads on state and federal land but many hunters will opt for modern lodging options found throughout this area.
