On The Ground
This unit is located in the northwest corner of the state and includes the Raft River Mountains. Elk live on a mixture of private and public land. Elk are highly migratory in this area and spend their time bouncing across the Idaho and Utah state lines.
Locating elk herds can be diffuclt at times due to outside hunting pressure, private land distribution, and the fact that the elk will commonly cross into Idaho.
Terrain
This unit has a lot of desert country. The valley floor leads up through creek drainages and rolling foothills to steep mountain ranges. Access hunting areas can be tough in lower country areas due to private land but some larger chunks of public land are available throughout the Raft River Mountain range.
Roughly 372 square miles
45% public land
Elevations vary from about 5,000-10,000 feet
Vegetation
Low elevations are irrigated farm land, sagebrush, pinyon pines, junipers and some oak brush. Continuing up through the middle elevations, sagebrush is mixed with aspens, and some spruces and firs. Higher country has scattered aspen groves with steep slopes covered in conifer forests. Several high basins are grassy with short sagebrush.
Access
Part of the Sawtooth National Forest gives public access. Roads are on all sides of the unit with well-maintained dirt roads leading to less-maintained four-wheel-drive roads and ATV trails. A lot of private land and some large ranches control some critical water sources. Highway 30 makes up the southern and eastern borders of the unit and has many access point that branch off of it.
Camping and Lodging
Most hunters camp along roads on flat places that are good spots to park a travel trailer or set up a tent. A couple of designated campgrounds are open to the public. Wendover is the nearest city, but is more than an hour from the unit.
