On The Ground
With generous hunt dates and the ability to hunt elk later in the year, this can be a fun hunt. The weather during this hunt can be cold, but gives hunters an extra chance to harvest an elk.
A hunter willing to learn the unit and put time in on the ground will have a chance to harvest a mature bull or a cow. Hunters need to take an extended archery ethics course before hunting.
Terrain
The majority of the unit is lower in elevation, and is considered winter range. The valley floor is farmland and rolling flats with creeks running through them. There are some foot hills that roll through the unit.
Roughly 1,196 square miles
Elevations from 4,800-6,500 feet
Vegetation
Most vegetation here consists of irrigated crops or fields. Some sage brush, grass and cottonwoods can be found lining some of the creek drainages. There are also areas that have scattered pinyon pines and juniper trees.
Access
Much of this area has private property or tribal lands, with small sections of public land. There are good maintained roads throughout the unit. Try and gain access to private property before the hunt
Camping and Lodging
The unit is on the outskirts of the towns in the Uintah Valley. With Duchesne, Roosevelt, and Vernal found within the area, there are plenty of options for hotels.
