On the Ground

The small subunit is located within the main La Sal Mtns unit and lies just south of the town of Moab. This unit was created in response to growing CWD concerns in the area and the hope is that these late hunts will give hunters the best opportunity to harvest older age-class bucks, the suspected spreaders of the CWD.

Terrain

This unit features a diverse landscape, with a mix of canyons, mesas, red rock cliffs, and desert terrain. The region is known for its dramatic geological formations, including towering sandstone cliffs, spires, arches, and natural rock bridges. At lower elevations, desert scrub and shrublands dominate, with plants like sagebrush and juniper thriving in the arid environment. Higher elevations feature pinyon-juniper woodlands, providing habitat for wildlife. Riparian zones along streams and rivers offer a contrast to the dry landscape, supporting lush vegetation such as willows and cottonwoods.

  • Roughly 175 square miles

  • 70% public land

  • Elevations range from 4,000 - 7,500 feet

At lower elevations, desert scrub and shrublands dominate, with drought-tolerant plants like sagebrush, rabbitbrush, and greasewood. As you move to higher elevations, pinyon-juniper woodlands take over, providing habitat for wildlife with pinyon pine and Utah juniper. Riparian zones along streams and rivers contrast with the dry desert, supporting lush vegetation such as willows, cottonwoods, and sedges. Mid-elevations feature grasses like blue grama and Indian ricegrass, while the lower, arid regions host cacti and succulents, including prickly pear and barrel cacti.

Public access is great in this unit and hunters can hunt deer in the vast majority of the area. Some roadless areas are present throughout the unit. The western portion of the unit is largely composed of private lands and there are also some large chunks in the southeastern quadrant of the unit.

Many hunters choose to camp on public land scattered throughout the unit, taking advantage of the remote, natural surroundings. These campsites offer a more rugged experience for those looking to immerse themselves in the wilderness. However, for those seeking more comfort and convenience, modern lodging options are plentiful in the town of Moab, including hotels, motels, and vacation rentals. Moab also offers amenities such as restaurants, gear shops, and services.
