On The Ground

Desert rams do well in this unit, which is between St. George and Kanab and surrounds Zion National Park. It has become well known among sheep enthusiasts because the state issues more tags here than in other units and hunters have taken bigger rams here than in most other Utah units.

Terrain

Most sheep are found southeast and southwest of Zion National Park in steep canyons with sandstone cliffs and on buttes and mesas. Sheep water in some streams and springs and at a few guzzlers that have been built in the east end. Hunters have had problems trying to navigate the many cliffs and canyons here. Hunters should scout many days before the season to learn how to get around obstacles or hire a guide to make the most of a once-in-a-lifetime tag.

  • Roughly 1,724 square miles

  • 66% public land

  • Elevations from 5,022-10,287 feet

High elevations contain dense Engelmann spruce that mingle with ponderosa pines and firs. Middle elevations have Douglas firs, aspens, manzanita, grass meadows, and sagebrush. Low elevations have pinyon/juniper woods, sagebrush, oak brush, grasses and other browse.

Many good dirt roads and ATV trails provide great access to the terrain where sheep live. Rams are scattered, so hunters must cover a great deal of ground between sheep sightings. Roads that branch from State Route 50 and US Highway 89 offer good access in the south.

  • Well-maintained Coral Pink Sand Dunes Road gives access in the southeast

  • Hunters can see some sheep from main roads

  • Great vehicle and ATV access when compared to other Western sheep units

Kanab, Colorado City, and Hurricane provide lodging, gas, groceries and other supplies. Camping is allowed on most public land.
