On The Ground
Sheep here have been suffering from a die-off over the last couple of years. Sheep can be found here, but are few in numbers and spread throughout the unit.
Terrain
Mainly flat land, with steep rocky canyons that cut through the ridges and mountains. Mountain tops are flat and lead to the valley floor. There are also many slick rock areas. While most of this unit is flat, it can be difficult to travel through.
Roughly 1,683 square miles
86% public land
Elevations from 4,100-7,665 feet
Vegetation
Lower elevations have dry, desert rolling hills and flats. Consisting of different grasses, prickly-pear cactus, yucca and sage brush with scattered pinyon pines and juniper trees. Vegetation does not change much in higher elevations aside from pinyon and juniper trees getting thicker.
Access
With the majority of the land controlled by the BLM, there is good public access. However, with a lack of maintained roads, some areas can be difficult to get into. There are a few maintained gravel roads that lead to four-wheel- drive or ATV-roads. Cliff bands and steep canyons can make accessing some areas challenging. There aren’t many trails, foot travel will be cross country and difficult.
ATV recommended
Four-wheel-drive recommended
Camping and Lodging
Some hunters camp along roads, there are several locations that have good flat camping locations for travel trailers or tents. There are also two BLM managed campgrounds within the unit, The Wedge and Swinging Bridge. Green River, Castle Dale, and Price are towns near the unit that offer lodging, but are somewhat far from the hunting areas.
