On The Ground
Good area for Desert Bighorns and a typical sheep hunt for Utah. SR95 makes up the western boundary of the unit with the Green and Colorado Rivers bordering the rest of the unit. While strenuous, some hunters may consider this unit one of the better sheep units in the state.
Terrain
Mainly flat land, with steep rocky canyons that cut through the ridges and mountains. Mountain tops are flat and lead to the valley floor. While most of this area flat, it can be challenging to travel through.
Roughly 2,050 square miles
99% public land
Elevations from 7,100-4,100 feet
Vegetation
Lower elevations have dry, desert rolling hills and flats. Different grasses, prickly-pear cactus, yucca and sage brush with scattered pinyon pines and juniper trees. Vegetation does not change much in higher elevations aside from pinyon and juniper trees getting thicker.
Access
With the majority of the land controlled by the BLM, there is good public access. Some roads that provide access are Angel Point Road, Sams Mesa Road, Poison Springs Wash road, and numerous roads off of SR95. However, with a lack of maintained roads, some areas can be difficult to get into. There are few maintained gravel roads that lead to four-wheel- drive or ATV-roads. The elevation to find sheep is 3700 to 6000 feet but there aren’t many trails so foot travel will be cross country and difficult in some areas. Cliff bands and impassible canyons can limit the areas to hunt.
ATV recommended
Four-wheel-drive recommended
Camping and Lodging
Some hunters camp along roads, there are several locations that have good flat camping locations for travel trailers or tents. Some locations are in small coves sheltered from the wind. Green River to the north and Hanksville to the west are towns that are near the unit and offer services.
