On The Ground

Located south of Moab, this unit is a part of the red rock canyons that Utah is known for. Those lucky enough to have a tag for this unit will have the hunt of a lifetime. This unit can be physically strenuous.

This unit has typical sheep hunting that consists of chasing a few animals in a large area. Get the best glass you can and stay behind it for successful glassing.

Terrain

Located in the eastern half of the state, this unit is relatively flat. The landscape is carved up with steep rocky canyons that twist and wind through the ridges and mountains.

  • Roughly 560 square miles

  • 96% public land

  • Elevations from 3,900-5,700 feet

Lower elevations in this unit area have dry, desert rolling hills and flats. Some different grasses, prickly-pear cactus, yucca and sagebrush with scattered pinyon pines and juniper trees can be found throughout this area.

With the majority of the land being controlled by the BLM, there is a lot of public access. However, with the lack of maintained roads some areas can be difficult to get into. There are a few maintained gravel roads that lead to four-wheel drive or ATV roads. There are not many trails, so foot travel will be cross country and difficult in some areas. This unit is easily accessible from Moab.

  • ATV recommended

  • Four-wheel drive recommended

Most hunters camp along roads. There are several locations that have good, flat camping locations for travel trailers or tents. Some of the locations are in small coves where you are sheltered from the wind, which can be strong at times. Moab is in the northern end of the unit and has lodging and services.
