On The Ground

The canyon country north of Lake Powell is remote and good habitat for desert bighorn rams. The accessibility of this unit is highly dependent on the weather with the roads getting washed out often.

Terrain

Mainly flat land, with steep rocky canyons that cut through the ridges and mountains. The mountain tops in this unit are flat and lead to the valley floor. Along the east edge, a long flat-top mountain runs the length of the unit, the 50 Mile Mountain. While most of this area is flat, it can be difficult to travel through.

  • Roughly 1,001 square miles

  • 98% public land

  • Elevations range from 3,900-7,600 feet

Lower elevations have dry, desert rolling hills and flats. The lower elevations also contain different grasses, prickly-pear cactus, yucca, and sagebrush with scattered pinyon pines and juniper trees. Vegetation does not change much in higher elevations aside from pinyon and juniper trees getting thicker.

With the majority of the unit land being controlled by the BLM, there is great public access. However, with a lack of maintained roads, some areas can be difficult to get into. There are only a few maintained gravel roads that lead to four-wheel-drive or ATV-roads. Hunters can access this unit from Big Hole, UT, Hole in the Rock Road, and the Smokey Mountain Road depending on where they are coming from. There are not many trails which means foot travel will be cross country and difficult in some areas. The southern border of the unit is Lake Powell giving some access by way of boat.

  • ATV recommended

  • 4-wheel drive recommended

Some hunters camp along roads, there are several locations that have good flat camping locations for travel trailers or tents. Some of the locations are in small coves sheltered from the wind. Escalante is located at the north end, with Page, Arizona just south of the unit. Both offer lodging.
