On The Ground

In a unit that is world renowned for its mule deer, the Henry Mountains also offer good hunting for a mature desert bighorn ram. This is not known as one of Utah’s premier sheep units, but it does offer decent access and is less physically demanding than some sheep hunts.

This hunt gives hunters a chance to hunt mature rams. Tags are difficult to draw in this area.

Terrain

The Henry Mountain Range is the only range here and has a high point of Mount Ellen Peak at 11,522 feet above sea level. There are deep canyons that run off of the peaks down to rolling foothills. The lower hills and valleys are dry, cut up canyon country leading to the Colorado River and start of Lake Powell on the southern end of the unit.

  • Roughly 1,355 square miles

  • 98% public land

  • Elevations range from 5,000-11,522 feet

Low elevations have dry, desert rolling hills and flats. Some grass, prickly-pear cactus, and sage brush with scattered pinyon pines and juniper trees. Middle elevations are covered in ponderosa pines, oak brush and sagebrush. The higher elevations have scattered small aspen groves with the steep slopes covered in conifer forests. The peaks are covered in grass, wildflowers, and rocky shale.

Although there is some private property on the unit, much of it is BLM or state land and offers good public access. There are numerous dirt roads that wind throughout the unit. Main access on the west side of the unit is the Notom Bullfrog road, and on the east is Highway 95. There are some wilderness study areas that don’t allow vehicle travel.

  • ATV recommended

  • 4-wheel drive recommended

Some hunters camp along roads, there are several locations that have good flat camping locations for travel trailers or tents. There are a couple of designated campgrounds open to the public. There are two designated campgrounds on Mt. Ellen, Lonesome Beaver and McMillan, and one on Mt. Hillers, Star Springs. Hanksville is the nearest town, but is far from hunting areas.
