Quick Tips

  • Scout the unit prior to the hunt if possible
  • Have a detailed map that shows road access
  • Take plenty of fuel, supplies and water
  • Good fishing in Flaming Gorge

On The Ground

This unit is not known for producing large bears, however, hunters can expect to see multiple bear tracks during their hunt. Due to the Forest Service road closures, this unit does not get hunted very heavily during the spring harvest objective season. The fall limited entry season overlaps with several deer and elk hunts so there will be heavy hunting pressure and camping use.

In the spring, the bear’s diet generally consists of grass, and forbs, and they will be relatively close to water sources. Most bear movement will take place during the early morning and evening hours. Their movement will continue to increase as hunts progress. The black bears’ mating season will reach its peak around the month of June. Expect bears to be covering ground and looking for opportunistic meals. Their diet will transition from grasses to more substantial foods such as acorns, pine nuts, and berries.

Terrain

Located in the corner south of Wyoming and west of Colorado, a majority of this unit is made up of high desert plateau terrain. Flat, rolling ridges with creek drainages and valleys divide them. Flaming Gorge and the Green River have carved a large canyon on the south edge of the unit.

Lower elevations have grass, sagebrush, pinyon pines and junipers that continue throughout middle elevations. There are some cottonwoods along the river and streams, as well as patches of conifers on some of the steeper slopes at higher elevations.

A portion of this unit is part of the Ashley National Forest with some land managed by the BLM, giving great public access. There is road access on all sides of the unit with well-maintained dirt roads leading to less-maintained four-wheel-drive roads or ATV trails. Some areas worth accessing are Greendale Junction, Meadow Park, Carter Creek, Goslin Creek, Mustang Ridge/Bare Top, and Summit Spring. Bare Top doesn't allow vehicle access.

  • ATVs recommended

  • Four-wheel drive recommended

Most hunters camp along roads, there are several locations that have good, flat camping locations for travel trailers or tents. There are a couple of designated campgrounds open to the public. Manila is the nearest town with lodging.

  • Arrive early for better camping locations

  • Expect to camp near other hunters
