On The Ground

East of Panguitch and north of Kanab, this unit has good numbers of antelope and great access to public hunting. Bryce Canyon National Park is in the heart of this unit.

This area has easy access and lots of hunting territory with a lot of water sources. Hunters and biologist reported a minor winterkill along US Highway 89.

Terrain

Most animals are on flat ground or small hills near the center of the unit and close to State Routes 12 and 22. Water is scattered with small ponds, seeps, and some streams. North of State Route 12 antelope are found on rolling hills that are covered with sagebrush and small patches of pinyon pines and junipers with some ponderosa pines. South of Route 12 pronghorns live on sagebrush flats with some ponderosas, giving hunters a chance to hunt in ponderosa pine forest. Some private land is south of Route 12. This is a large unit with an abundance of public land.

  • Roughly 2,550 square miles

  • 87% public land

  • Elevations range from 4,820-10,663 ft

High elevations are timbered with ponderosa pines with some aspen, while the middle elevations are primarily canyonlands with grass meadows, sagebrush, bitterbrush and scrub oak. Low country is covered by pinyon pines, junipers, sagebrush, and oak brush.

Hunters enjoy great road access. US Highway 89 is the western border. Dirt roads branching from that road give access in the west. State Routes 12 and 22 run through the middle of the unit and lead to numerous dirt roads. Excellent glassing sites are along State Routes 12 and 22. Dirt roads are sandy and can withstand lots of rain, so hunters seldom have problems driving on roads in bad weather.

  • ATVs are handy on primitive roads

  • Great road system

Ruby’s Inn, Fosters, and Pines hotels are in the center of the unit. Hunters can buy gas, groceries and other supplies there. Camping is permitted on most public land.
