Utah offers good moose hunting with good numbers of animals in many big game units. The herd was still less than 100 animals in the late ‘50s. Through in-state transplants, reproduction and increased penalties for illegally killing a moose, the population grew to about 4,000 in 2005. The state has reduced the number of animals to about 3,000 to keep the herd in balance with its habitat. In recent years, moose have reached places where they have never been seen before, like the Range Creek drainage southeast of Price.

Hunting season on Cooperative Wildlife Management Unit ranches is Sept. 1-Oct. 31

The rut takes place in late September or early October
Only residents may apply for CWMU tags that are allocated to the public
Applicants must buy a hunting license or a combination hunting and fishing license
