Located almost exactly in the center of the state, this unit is bordered on the north by the Cheyenne River and the east by the Missouri River. Being that the state of South Dakota controls all of the land up and down the river, there are miles of accessible and huntable riverfront, although the bulk of the unit is private ground with very little walk-in access.

It would be wise to secure some access to private land ahead of time to increase your odds of success.

There is a substantial amount of agriculture located near waterways throughout the unit, but overall much of the unit is comprised of prairie type lands. The prairie is relatively flat with some roll, and there isn’t much elevation change across the entire unit.

There is a mix of short and tall prairie grass and countless species of wildflowers cover most areas of the unit that haven’t been turned for agricultural purposes. Very sparse timber, which is primarily a mix of Cottonwood, American Elm, Green Ash, and Bur Oak, can be found along the riparian zones of both the Cheyenne and Missouri Rivers as well as other small creek beds scattered across the unit.

Highway 14 is the major route into this unit. There are many county roads that come off of this highway going in all directions across the unit. In the far southeast corner, Highway 83 comes up from the south and intersects with Highway 14 in the town of Pierre, SD. State Road 1806 heads north off of Highway 14 and makes its way along the Missouri River heading up towards the Cheyenne River which would get you access to many miles of riverfront.

There are many established campgrounds up and down each of the major rivers. If you are looking for hotels, grocery, gas, etc, Pierre and Fort Pierre, located in the southwest corner, will have just about anything you may need during your visit.
