The bulk of this unit is comprised of the Lower Brule Reservation. There is much hunting available on this reservation through a lottery system conducted by the reservation. Both mule deer and whitetail deer can be found in this unit but in general, it's a better unit for whitetail. Outside of some Corps of Engineers' property along the edge of the Missouri River, there is very little public access. Hunters planning on hunting outside of the reservation should have prior arrangements on some private land. There is little in regard to amenities on this unit other than the small town of Lower Brule located along the river near the southeast corner of the unit.

Being that the bulk of this unit is comprised of the Lower Brule reservation there is very little public land. The hunting on the reservation is available through an internal draw process conducted by the reservation. There is a 4-point or better restriction on mule deer on the reservation which leads to some great bucks taken each year.

The main terrain feature in this unit is the Missouri River which makes up the eastern boundary of this unit. As you head west of the river you will see a slight gain in elevation. Overall this unit has a very mellow terrain, there are no overwhelming drainages, cuts, or hills in the unit. There are scattered agricultural properties throughout the unit but there are miles of CRP and standard raw prairie throughout.

You will find a mix of short and tall prairie grass for miles throughout the unit as well as countless species of wildflowers in most areas of the unit outside of the land used for agricultural purposes. Very sparse timber which is primarily a mix of Cottonwood, American Elm, Green Ash, and Bur Oak can be found along the riparian zone of the Missouri River as well as other small creek beds scattered across the unit.

Running parallel to the river there is an improved road that you will find throughout the entire unit, this road has multiple different names including Highway 1806 in the west, the BIA Highway 10, and eventually BIA Highway 5. This is the most dominant route across the unit. State Highway 47 runs north and south through the unit on the far east side, similar to county highway 273 which you will find running south off of the main route on the far west side of the unit. Any of these routes will allow you to gain access to the majority of the unit. Each of them will lead to smaller county roads, and two tracks gaining access into the corners of the unit.

Located on the east side of the unit along the river is the town of Lower Brule. This relatively small town has the Golden Buffalo Casino and Motel if you are looking for a room and a shower. There are also groceries, fuel, and other amenities that you may need if you are hunting this unit. If you are looking for a camping location, the Left Tailrace Campground is located on a small peninsula on the river along Route 47 just south of the town of Fort Thompson.
