If you are looking for a chance to plan a DIY hunt this is a good option as there are over 100,000 acres of public land scattered across this unit. There is a major section of the Badlands National Park to contend with in this unit but there are many miles of public grassland surrounding the National Park. As you move further east into the unit the amount of public land gets more scarce. If you are looking to plan a hunt in this eastern portion of the state you will need landowner permission as much of the landscape is private. This unit has a good population of both mule deer and whitetail with a higher population of mule deer the closer you get to the National Park.

There is a good amount of Buffalo National Grassland in this unit in the western side of the unit. On the eastern side of the unit you’ll find lots of agricultural land and CRP.

There are many different state and county highways across this unit. Interstate 90 runs east to west directly through the center of the unit. Off of the interstate on the eastern side of the unit, highway 63 runs north and south. As you move westward highway 73 also runs north and south again exiting the unit in both directions. Further west in the unit highway 240 will head southwest into the town of Interior. Highway 14 slips into the unit from the northwest corner and quickly exits in the north center of the unit. There are countless county roads and two tracks that can get you into the far reaches of the unit.

There is a mix of short and tall prairie grass throughout this unit as well as countless species of wildflowers. You will also find agricultural land spread throughout the unit. Very sparse timber which is primarily a mix of Cottonwood, American Elm, Green Ash, and Bur Oak can be found along the riparian zone of the small creek beds scattered across the unit.

Interstate 90 runs through the center of this unit on the western end. Highway 63 runs north and south through the unit. As you move westward you will run into highway 73 also moving north and south. Highway 240 heads southwest towards the town of Interior, while highway 14 enters the unit from the northwest corner and quickly exits out the top center of the unit. All of these highways as well as the interstates will provide access to all corners of this unit. There are countless county roads coming off of these main routes as well. As a whole, there is fantastic access across the entire unit.

Kadoka, South Dakota is the largest township in this unit, located in the center of the unit along Interstate 90. There are multiple locally owned hotels, gas stations, and grocery stores located in this town. There are other smaller settlements across the unit including the small town of Interior in the southwest corner of the state. Overall no matter where you are located in the unit you are not going to be far from fuel and minor supplies. If you are looking to camp there are multiple established campgrounds just inside the Badlands National Park as well as the small RV type campgrounds spread across the unit. There are many places for remote camping in the grassland but you will need to check with current conditions and regulations before heading into the field.
