This unit is located in the southwest corner of the state on the southeast corner of the Black Hills. This unit is relatively small compared to most units in the state, but is mostly public land that can be hunted. This unit consists of dense forest with very dramatic elevation changes all throughout leading down to the Cheyenne River and Angostura Reservoir.

Lots of deer both mule deer and whitetail in the unit, but hunters struggle to find older age class deer.

This unit has a higher elevation on the northern edge and loses elevation as you get closer to the river. The upper elevations are a mixture of pine covered ridges giving way to grassy basins. Closer to the river you’ll find a more classic riparian zone ecosystem.

Around the Cheyenne Rivers and Angostura Reservoir you will see timber which is primarily a mix of Cottonwood, American Elm, Green Ash, and Bur Oak. Near this area will also be the typical riparian zone as well as in other small creek beds scattered across the unit.The upper elevations are more coniferous types of forests that go from dense patches to sparse the lower in elevation you get towards the river.

This unit is primarily public land, but there are not a lot of roads that will get you access to the majority of the areas like we see in most units of South Dakota. The main access point would be to come in from the top of the unit on County Highway 71A that will take you to Sheps Canyon State Recreation area. From there there are roads that head south following the river on both two tracks and more established roads. You will find roads can get you access to some areas, but you should plan to spend time on the ground hiking. Hiking will grant you access to the bulk of the unit and get you away from other hunters.

Camping is allowed on public land, but it's a good idea to check current regulations before heading out. There are a few established campgrounds all along the edge of the Angostura Reservoir. The town of Hot Springs to the north is the closest place to find a hotel, gas, groceries etc.
