This unit is located in the central-western portion of the state with a southern boundary running along Interstate 90. It is rather remote here with very little services across the bulk of the unit except for a few small townships along the interstate with the biggest being Wall, South Dakota. The unit is primarily private land with the only notable public land available in the far northeast portion of the unit, and is quite a ways away from any amenities. There are two major rivers running through this unit, the Cheyenne River and the Belle Fourche, offering some fantastic habitat, as well as miles of rolling hills covered in CRP and prairie grass.

With very limited public access here, very few hunters come to this unit without first acquiring access to private property.

You will lose elevation as you move from west to east and from south to north. There is around a thousand feet of elevation change across the entire unit, with the very northeast corner in the river bottom of the Cheyenne River being the lowest point. The bulk of the unit is very flat with little roll to the overall landscape. However, there are areas that are more broken than others, particularly around the Cheyenne and Belle Fourche Rivers, and the areas in between where the two rivers split.

A mix of short and tall prairie grass for miles in all directions, as well as countless species of wildflowers can be found in most areas of the unit that haven’t been turned for agricultural purposes. Very sparse timber which is primarily a mix of Cottonwood, American Elm, Green Ash, and Bur Oak can be found along the riparian zone of both the Cheyenne and Belle Fourche Rivers as well as other small creek beds scattered across the unit.

Interstate 90 makes up the southern border, while the county line to the east, and the New Underwood Rd on the west heading north to the Belle Fourche River creates the northern border. Overall there are countless county roads covering the majority of the unit which makes navigating to one spot or the other very simple. There is very little public ground in this unit and without a solid plan on some private ground you will have a very difficult time locating areas to hunt. The only other major road in the unit is the Elm Springs Road which heads north out of Wall, and exits the unit to the north as it crosses the Belle Fourche River.

Wall, South Dakota is located in the southwest corner of the unit along Interstate 90 and State Hwy 14. This town has a population of just under a thousand people. It has a number of amenities you would not normally find in a town this small from drug stores and trading posts, as well as locally owned restaurants and a few fast food chains. You should be able to get anything you may need outside of any major sporting goods purchases. There are a number of lodging options from bigger chains to locally owned hotels -being that the railroad goes through this town, it is a good idea to call ahead and make reservations as any given night every room in town could be booked with rail workers. If you are looking for a place to camp there are very limited locations in the unit, however, there are a few established campgrounds in Wall.
