The unit is found on the southern end of the Black Hills range in South Dakota. Good elk numbers are found here and hunters lucky enough to hold a tag will be in for a great hunt. This unit does not have as much public land as some of the other Black Hills units but it does have some huge walk-in areas to offset this. This unit does have a little more break in the tree cover as compared to some other units and spot and stalk methods can work excellent here.

Good numbers of elk can be found in this unit along with a good amount of public lands to chase them on. While this unit has a slightly lower public land distribution than some other units it does offer some massive walk-in areas to offset this.

This unit is very broken and features many terrain types. Many of the north-facing hillsides in the unit are heavily timbered while most of the areas between these, be it flats or slopes, remain fairly open and sparsely timbered. This lends itself to great spot and stalk hunting opportunities for both the archery and rifle seasons. Hunters will find little trouble in physically traversing most of this area and many roads exist that provide vehicle access to most corners of the unit.

Many of the north-facing areas are heavily timbered with stands of primarily Ponderosa pines but hunters will also encounter white spruce, aspen, bur ok, and paper birch. Some juniper can be found in lower elevations. Natural grasses and sage will be present throughout the unit but will in the greatest abundance in more open areas and at lower elevations.

Pleasant Valley Road more or less composes the northern edge of the unit while the southern boundary is bound to the Cheyenne River. The town of Hot Springs is found on the far eastern edge of the unit where highways 18 and 71 also extend into the unit. County and forest service roads are found throughout the unit that provide pretty straightforward access into most of the area.

Modern lodging options can be found in Hot Springs located on the far east side of the unit but most of the area is fairly desolate outside of that. Some gear and amenities can also be found in Hot Springs. There are a few campgrounds located near Hot Springs as well but hunters may also camp on public grounds throughout the unit.
