Located in the far southwest corner of the state with the southern boundary running east and west along the Nebraska border. The western border runs north to south on the Wyoming border. The terrain is quite broken, with a mixture of pine ridges that give way to grassy meadows. There are numerous small creeks scattered across the unit. The most notable town in the unit is Edgemont located towards the western side of the unit. There’s also the town of Oelrichs which can be found in the eastern side of the unit. The unit has a large amount of public land as well as walk-in ground.

Elk exist in very small densities in this unit and are most cmonnoly found on privately owned lands.

This unit is a mixture of rolling sandhill terrain mixed with bluffs and pine ridges. There are numerous small creeks scattered all across the unit, with Cottonwood tree bottoms and typical riparian zones up and down them.

You will find a mix of short and tall prairie grass for miles in all directions as well as countless species of wildflowers in most areas of the unit. Very sparse timber which is primarily a mix of Cottonwood, American Elm, Green Ash, and Bur Oak can be found along the riparian zones of all the small creeks spread across the unit.

State Highway 18 runs north to south as the main access point on the eastern side of the unit. Cascade Road 71 makes its way northwest and southeast across the western side of the unit. There are lots of stretches of public land up and down each of these routes but the western side of the unit has the majority of the walk-in land.

There are a number of established campgrounds particularly in the northern portion of the unit. There are several of them near Angostura Reservoir. There is another at Little Rock Falls, and another located near the town of Edgemont. Camping is allowed in Buffalo Gap Grassland, but checking current restrictions before you head out is a good idea. There are also locally owned hotels as well as gas and groceries in both Edgemont and Oelrichs.
