If you are looking for a chance to plan a DIY hunt this is not a bad choice with its many acres of public lands. There is a major section of the Badlands National Park to contend with in this unit but there are many miles of public grassland surrounding the National Park. As you move further east into the unit the amount of public land gets more scarce and if you are looking to plan a hunt in this portion of the unit it will need to be with prior arrangements as much of the landscape is private land. The southern half of the unit is largely comprised of both private and tribal lands, hunters will need private permission to hunt these areas.

Decent numbers of antelope can be found here along with a good chunk of public lands to chase them on. There is a good amount of Buffalo National Grassland in this area on the western side of the unit. On the eastern side of the unit there is much agriculture and CRP.

This area has a healthy mixture of terrain types. Most of the unit is fairly flat and dominated by agricultural areas but the central portion of the unit along the White River and the Badlands National Park will see some extreme terrain variation and can be great for spot and stalk hunting.

A mix of short and tall prairie grass for miles in all directions as well as countless species of wildflowers can be found in most areas of the unit that haven’t been turned for agricultural purposes. Very sparse timber which is primarily a mix of Cottonwood, American Elm, Green Ash, and Bur Oak can be found along the riparian zone of the small creek beds scattered across the unit.

Several main highways and Interstate 90 provide straightforward access to all locations within the unit. From these primary roads, many county roads crisis coss the unit and hunters will find little trouble in physically accessing areas.

There are multiple locally owned hotels, gas stations, and groceries located throughout the unit. Overall no matter where you are located in the unit you are not going to be far from fuel and minor supplies. If you are looking to camp there are multiple established campgrounds just inside the Badlands National Park as well as the small RV type campgrounds spread across the unit. There are many places for remote camping in the grassland but you will need to check with current conditions and regulations before heading into the field.
