On The Ground

East of Goose Lake on the California‐Oregon border, this mostly public unit offers hunting for mule deer, California bighorn sheep, elk and antelope.

There are very few elk in the unit, mule deer are doing average, antelope herds are healthy and this unit also holds the opportunity for California bighorn sheep.

Terrain

Largely arid and treeless, this unit ranges from desert lowlands to steep breaks such as Abert Rim, Lynchs Rim and South Warner Rim. Most of the treeless terrain is between 4,300 and 6,000 feet above sea level. There are several large alkali lakes, including Abert Lake. Some narrow mountains have greenery that is typically between 6,000 and 8,500 feet in elevation. Most mountains are in the Fremont‐Winema National Forest. The BLM controls the bulk of the northern third and eastern half.

  • Roughly 923 square miles

  • 70% public land

  • Elevations from 4,200-8,500 feet

Most land is covered with bunchgrasses, rabbitbrush and sagebrush with junipers, ponderosa pines and other conifers in places. Higher hills and mountains are roughly 50% grassy and brushy slopes and 50% forested.

Many roads access the area, but some terrain is rugged and roadless. New travel rules are in effect on the Fremont‐Winema National Forest. Hunters can buy maps at Forest Service offices. The BLM manages most of the land, particularly in the north and in the east. A lot of private property is in the central part of the unit, especially along the western edge. The southern end has two semi‐primitive motorized recreation areas, Mount Bidwell and Crane Mountain. No vehicles are allowed in Drake-McDowell Semi-Primitive Non-Motorized Recreation Area.

Camping is allowed on almost all public land along dirt and gravel roads. Fremont‐Winema National Forest maintains several campgrounds. Lakeview lodging options include Hunters Hot Springs Resort and Skyline Motor Lodge.
