On The Ground

Unit B4 is the most northern sheep unit and it has routinely produced some of the better rams in the state over the past several years. Most of the public access is found along the southern and eastern portions of this unit. Compromised primarily of the Little Missouri River badlands, this unit holds good rugged terrain providing great habitat for bighorn sheep. Successful tag holders should have no issue getting away from civilization and turning up some good rams.

One of the better producing bighorn sheep units in the state with phenomenal success rates and good mature rams. Be sure to check the harvest reports and put the time is scouting for a successful hunt.

Terrain

They call Unit B4 part of North Dakota’s Badlands Region. Although many areas of this unit are easily accessible, there are plenty of spots that will require a hike. And if you’re willing to put in a long hike, you’ll have ample opportunity to get away from all other hunters. Rougher badlands run through the primary heart of the unit. More mellow farmlands and pastures cover most of the northern and southeastern portions, while steep buttes and rough, densely forested draws and creek bottoms are closer to the river. The Little Missouri River runs through the center of this unit and irrigates a healthy deciduous forest along its banks. The river also feeds a number of coulees. Drastic inclines and sharp changes in elevation are normal throughout this unit. It will be a tough hike, but a worthwhile hike.

  • Roughly 1,708 square miles

  • 36% public land

  • Elevations range from 1,900 – 2,900 ft

The Little Missouri River flows right through the center of this unit, creating a heavily forested valley of deciduous trees, primarily aspen and oak. There’s also some dense stands of ponderosa pine along the river valley. Most creek bottoms and draws are forested with aspen and oak as well as some ash, elm, birch and juniper. Buckbrush thickets are common throughout this unit as well. Primary grasses in this unit include blue grama grass and wheatgrass. Farmland and pastures are found primarily in northern portions of the unit.

Most of this unit is extremely rough, with a few roads winding through the bottoms of draws. There are enough roads through the tough terrain that you’ll be able to find a spot to hunt without having to hike too far. It may not be the spot you’re wanting to hunt, but there are options. The farther you’re willing to hike in the badlands, the more opportunity you’ll have on the Little Missouri National Grassland. Highway 85, highway 68 and highway 16 will get you into the heart of the unit from all directions. The oil industry is active in many of the roughest parts of Unit B4. Wherever there’s an active oilfield, the roads will be well maintained to accommodate the increased truck traffic.

The northern side of the unit is where your bigger towns will be, from Fairview MT to Watford City. There are a few campgrounds along the Little Missouri River and near Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Watford City has a sporting goods stores in case you are in need of supplies or ammunition. Really, once you’re away from the four corners of this unit, you’re away from any towns. Don’t get stuck out there low on fuel or without food and water.
