On The Ground

This unit is made up primarily of agricultural farmland. There are plenty of deer in the area, but not many public land opportunities.

Good deer herds and numbers can be found here and hunters with good access, or private access, can be in for a great hunt. Whitetail are m0re common in this unit than mule deer.

Terrain

There are two moraines in this unit that make for a unique hunting experience. Altamont Moraine is on the west side of the unit, while Streeter Moraine is on the east side. Both of these areas provide broken up country that whitetail deer love to call home. While there is not much in the way of tree cover, the rolling hills and broken up terrain provide plenty of places for deer to hide. Long Lake Creek runs through Altamont Moraine and provides riparian habitat that deer enjoy. There are several small plots of land that will certainly hold deer, but most of these are managed for waterfowl hunting. The eastern side of the unit contains many small pothole ponds.

  • Roughly 3,086 square miles

  • 3.6% public land

  • Elevations range from 1,800 – 2,100ft

This unit has a lot of agricultural land on its east side. It is well known for providing ample grains and livestock agriculture. However, it also has ample grassland and wetlands.

The majority of the land in this unit is easy to get to and will not require four-wheel drive. There are multiple highways cutting through the unit, making travel quick and easy. In order to find good hunting opportunities in this unit, hunters will need to put in time well before the season getting to know what private lands allow hunting. That is not to say that public hunting opportunities don’t exist.

Jamestown campground is the only campground in the unit located in the northeast corner. It offers gravel RV pads, showers, and bathrooms. Not far from the campground is Jamestown, which is located right outside the unit and has numerous places to stay. If you are looking to stay within the unit boundaries, Napoleon has a few nice options such as the Mozy Inn.
