Quick Tips

  • Spend some time in the area well before hunting season so you can better understand which private property allows hunting and which doesn't
  • The rivers in this area all provide excellent habitat and are surrounded by farmland that is sure to produce large deer

On The Ground

As with most of the surrounding units, Unit 2G2 is made up primarily of cultivated cropland. This provides an ample food supply for the whitetail population. The public-land offerings in this unit are few and far between, but they do exist.

Tewaukon National Wildlife Refuge is large enough to spend several days hunting and never go to the same area twice. For public land DYI, this is a good area to focus your efforts.

Terrain

Like most of the surrounding units, this unit is made up of mostly agricultural land. However, there are more drainages here than in most units that provide excellent whitetail habitat, and with that comes trees and breaks in the land. In the southern part of the unit, just below the Tewaukon National Wildlife Refuge, there are some hills with decent prominence relative to the rest of North Dakota, with elevations that get up to nearly 1,800 ft. There are also a few rivers that break up the unit, with the Wild Rice River running through the east side of the unit, the James River cutting through the middle, and the Maple River running through the western portion of the unit.

  • Roughly 1,655 square miles

  • 3% public land

  • Elevations range from 1,100 – 1,800 ft

One unique feature of 2G2 is its vegetation. Tewaukon National Wildlife Refuge has diverse, native grasslands that have never been cultivated. There are also ample wetlands throughout the region. The combination of agriculture, wetlands, and grasslands makes it excellent for deer.

The majority of the land in this unit is easy to get to and will not require four-wheel drive. There are multiple highways cutting through the unit, making travel quick and easy. Hunters will need to do some scouting in order to find the private areas that allow hunting. However, there are some public-land opportunities along the Wild Rice River for the whitetail hunter. The Tewaukon National Wildlife Refuge in the southeast region of the unit also provides a large chunk of public-land hunting.

Unit 2G2 is sparsely populated, but Oakes, in the middle of the unit, does provide lodging. Hunters that choose to camp can camp close to where you hunt in the Tewakon National Wildlife refuge. Camping is allowed in most of the wildlife management areas in the state, but be sure to check specific regulations before pitching a tent.
