As with most of the surrounding units, unit 2G1 is made up primarily of cultivated cropland. This provides an ample food supply for the whitetail population. Public-land offerings in this unit are significant, especially relative to some surrounding units. If public land and having a lot of room to roam is what you are looking for, 2G1 is a great area for you to put in some work.

The west side of the unit along the James River has high-quality habitat, but you will have to do some work prior to your season to figure out which private lands allow hunting.

Like most of the nearby areas, 2G1 is made up of a lot of agricultural land. However, there is far more public land in this area than in most of the surrounding areas, and this land is not cultivated. It is made up of gentle grasslands that are easy to traverse. The unit also has the Sheyenne River and the James River that provide the typical river-bottom habitat that whitetail love. Tree-stand hunters could do well in this part of the unit. Extending both North and South of the rivers, the area is generally flat or mellow, with some breaks in the land coming around the rivers. The east side of the area offers a large swath of public land that is part of the Sheyenne National Grassland.

One unique feature of 2G1 is its vegetation. Tewaukon National Wildlife Refuge has diverse, native grasslands that have never been cultivated. There are also ample wetlands throughout the region. The combination of agriculture, wetlands, and grasslands makes it excellent for deer.

The majority of the land in this unit is easy to get to and will not require four-wheel drive. There are multiple highways cutting through the unit, making travel quick and easy. There are also multiple walking trails throughout the public land in the east part of the unit that makes traversing the unit less challenging. While it is a good idea to use the trails as much as possible to get to where you are going, it is also wise to spend the majority of your time hunting a good distance from any man-made trails, whether they are for motorized vehicles or foot-traffic only. The east side of the unit offers very little in the way of public access, but hunters may still find success if they are able to determine which private lands allow hunting.

There are several places to camp in this unit. Jorgen’s Hallow Campground could make an excellent base camp if you are hunting the public land on the east side of the unit. You may not even need to get in the truck after waking up. There is additional camping around Dead-Colt Creek Reservoir and along the James River on the west side of the unit at La Moure County Memorial Park.
