On The Ground

In the far northeastern corner of the state, Unit 2C comprises primarily private farmland across the entire unit. However, there are some public access areas scattered throughout the unit that will provide public land hunters with whitetail hunting opportunities. The majority of these are waterfowl production areas.

The rivers in this area all provide excellent habitat and are surrounded by farmland that is sure to produce large deer. This would be a good place to focus your efforts.

Terrain

This unit is made up of mostly flat agricultural land. However, the Red River of The North does run along the eastern border, and the Middle Branch of The Forest River cuts through the center, and with that comes trees and breaks in the land – all things that deer like.

  • Roughly 3,056 square miles

  • 1.6% public land

  • Elevations range from 1,000 – 1,100 ft

The agriculture in this region can consist of corn, soybeans, and sugar beets, all of which have ample calories and are excellent for deer. Along the Red River of The North and the Middle Branch of The Forest River, you will find trees and shrubs, with the trees being largely deciduous. This type of vegetation makes for excellent deer habitat and would be a smart place to focus your attention.

There are plenty of public roads getting you close to the Trust Lands and other public hunting grounds. There are some unpaved roads in this unit, but most of them are well-maintained. Interstate 29 runs north and south along the east side of the unit and makes it easy to access from top to bottom. Some of the most productive deer hunting land in this unit is along the Red River of The North. Make sure you only hunt the western bank, however, as this river is the border of both the state and the unit. There are a few public access areas along it, such as the Dean C. Hildenbrand Wildlife Management Area or the Duncklee Wildlife Management Area. Both provide easily accessible property for hunting whitetails along the river.

There is a Grand Forks hotel that offers lodging in the southeast corner of the unit. If you would like to stay further north in the unit, Grafton also offers plenty of choices for lodging. If hunters are looking for primitive camping, most of the wildlife management areas in North Dakota allow camping, but be sure to check each one’s specific regulations as they can vary.
