On The Ground

Unit 51B is the smaller of the two subunits in Unit 51. Private land in the northeast portion of the unit will limit access, but there is plenty of accessible terrain within the unit. Much of the public ground is within the Chama River Wilderness. A wide array of terrain and ground cover will be foudn throughout the unit although the southern end of the unit tends to see far more timber.

This unit is known for having good numbers of elk on public land. There are not a lot of mule deer in the area.

Terrain

Most of the area is composed of rolling mountains and mesas. The steepest terrain is found on the sides of the ridges that rise above rivers and eroded creek drainages. The western boundary runs down the Chama River and encircles the eastern part of the Chama River Wilderness. Sandstone cliffs rise above the river in places.

  • Roughly 197 square miles

  • 66.3% public land

  • Elevations from 6,200-8,100 feet

Below about 7,500 feet in elevation you will find pinyon pines, junipers, wild grasses and various shrubs, including Gambel oak. Over 7,500 feet ponderosa pines grow in forests along meadows and creek bottoms, which are full of willows and brush.

Gravel and dirt roads provide access to most areas. Unit 51B is a mixture of private, BLM, state and Forest Service land and includes the eastern sector of the Chama River Wilderness.

  • Maps showing land ownership will be useful

  • No vehicles are allowed in the Chama River Wilderness

  • Four-wheel drive recommended

  • ATVs are recommended

Most hunters camp along Forest Service roads while some prefer to stay in developed campgrounds. Camping is available in the Rio Chama Campground on the west side of the unit. Echo Campground is located on the eastern side of the unit near the Echo Amphitheatre.
