Most hunters are unaware of the fact that New Mexico is home to eastern whitetail deer. These deer live in units primarily along the northeastern portion of the state and are usually found along creek and river bottoms. Some quality whitetail hunting can be found along the Colorado, Texas and Oklahoma borders. New Mexico is not known for producing trophy whitetail deer and only one buck has been harvested that was entered in the Boone and Crockett record book. Private land will restrict access in much of the whitetail deer habitat in New Mexico. Tags are drawn in a lottery without any point system. Youth and mobility- impaired-only seasons are available and offer a good opportunity with great dates.
