Turkey are found in scattered populations through the entire state of New Mexico with the largest concentrations being found in the northern part of the state. Three sub-species of wild turkey are found in New Mexico including Merriams, Rio Grande, and Goulds. The state recently introduced once-in-a-lifetime tags for the limited Goulds turkey population, tags that are sure to draw in many applicants. Many hunting opportunties are available to hunters including draw hunts, youth only hunts, as well as over the counter permits for both the Spring and Fall seasons. In New Mexico, free water is essential for turkey survival since vegetation may not be able to meet moisture requirements. Turkeys are often found in forested areas interspersed with edges and fields.
