On The Ground

Situated in the very southern tip of Nevada, this unit is primarily public land with half the unit in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, which is open to hunting. This unit holds the Newberry Mountains and offers the unique experience of using a boat on Lake Mohave during a desert sheep hunt.

Great for desert sheep hunting. Hunters report finding and looking at a large number of rams, making for enjoyable hunting. Most rams live in Keyhole Canyon, Ireteba Peaks and White Rock Wash. Physically demanding for spot-and-stalk hunting. Healthy sheep herd here. Many artificial and natural water sources. Low resident deer numbers.

Terrain

Mostly classic desert terrain with rugged, steep mountains and rocky ledges. Softly rolling desert hills are at the base of mountain ranges, leading into small, tight canyons with broken, rocky ledges.

  • Roughly 415 square miles

  • 92% public land

  • Elevations range from 700 feet at Lake Mohave to 5,600-foot peaks.

Cactus and creosote brush grow at lower elevations, and mahogany woodlands take hold as elevations increase.

Plenty of public roads and four-wheel-drive trails can take you to a starting point in any part of this unit. Private land does not impair access to or across public land. You can reach hunting grounds from all bordering roads.

  • Carry maps that show places where motorized access is restricted.

  • You may use a boat to reach places to look for game but cannot shoot from a boat.

  • Hunting from a boat and reaching good terrain by boat is effective.

  • Well groomed county and powerline roads

  • Roads to almost all hunting grounds

Both Bullhead City, Arizona, and Searchlight, Nevada, are not far from hunting grounds. Searchlight has limited services. Commutes to and from hunting grounds can drain energy.

  • Most hunters prefer to camp.

  • Camping allowed on public grounds

  • Motorized equipment, such as chainsaws, are prohibited in select areas.
