On The Ground

Desert bighorn sheep are the only big game animals that do well in this unit, which includes the Specter Range and part of the Stripped Hills south of the Nellis Air Force Range. Terrain is typical of southcentral Nevada with desert valleys and moderately steep hills with shale, rocks and vertical cliffs.

Primarily sheep country, this unit has a high population of rams, but provides no antelope hunting and has few mule deer. Hunting for desert bighorns can be a great experience.

Terrain

Typical of southcentral Nevada, terrain consists of low desert valleys and moderately steep, rocky hills with shale and vertical cliffs. The Specter Mountains and part of the Stripped Hills are home to desert bighorn sheep, which rely on guzzlers for water. This is one of the smallest game management units in the state and is 20 miles from east to west at the widest point and no more than seven miles from north to south. The Nevada Test Site, which is controlled by the U.S. Air Force, forms the northern and eastern boundaries.

  • Roughly 87 square miles

  • 100% public land

  • Elevations from about 2,800-4,872 feet

Salt scrub, creosote brush, cactus and native grasses grow in the valleys, tall brush grows in some parts of the hills.

Public roads, ranging from paved highway and maintained gravel roads to four-wheel-drive roads and ATV trails, lead to good places to start hunting. Some parts are rocky, so carry extra spares.

  • Private property does not impact access to public land

  • Do not enter Nellis Air Force Range

  • Four-wheel-drive vehicles and ATVs are important

  • Highway 95 is the southern boundary

Towns with services along Highway 95 include Beatty, Armagosa Valley (Lathrop Wells) and Indian Springs. Carry extra fuel and supplies. Hunters often park RVs or put up tents along roads.
