On The Ground

This unit includes Goldfield Hill, Kawich and Reveille ranges and Ralston, Reveille and Stone Cabin valleys. Terrain is typical of south-central Nevada with low sagebrush valleys and steep, timbered mountains. Some private property is in the valleys and Nellis Air Force Range is on the southern boundary.

This unit holds a low number of mule deer. A great number of antelope live in lower valleys and foothills.

Terrain

Irrigated crop fields and low-lying sagebrush valleys lie below steep mountains and peaks with dense timber.

  • Roughly 1,327 square miles

  • 99.3% public land

  • Elevations from 5,000-9,500 feet

Sagebrush and other desert brush can be found in the lowlands brush. Pinyon pines and junipers cover foothills from 6,500-8,000 feet with small aspen patches around water sources. Above 8,000 feet are open sagebrush basins with dense stands of mahogany and pinyons with steep cliffs and rock formations.

Paved highways, maintained gravel roads, four-wheel-drive road and ATV trails provide public access to good places to start hunting. Some parts are rocky, so carry extra spare tires. The southern boundary is Nellis Air Force Range, which prohibits access.

  • Private property does not impede access to public land

  • Four-wheel-drive vehicles and ATVs are important

Main roads:

  • Highway 95 is the western boundary

  • Highway 6 on the northern boundary

  • Highway 375 on the eastern boundary

Tonopah on Highways 95 and 6 has food, fuel and lodging. The small town of Rachel on Highway 375 and Goldfield on Highway 95 has limited services. It’s important to plan ahead while traveling through big desert terrain, carrying sufficient fuel and other supplies. The unit has camping spots where hunters can park RVs or pitch tents.
