On The Ground

In the heart of the Mojave Desert, the Pahranagat and East Pahranagat ranges are rough and remote with limited motorized access, but are good places for deer hunters.

Finding a water source is key for hunting antelope and deer. Deer tags good in Units 241-245. Pronghorn tags good in Units 132-134

Terrain

Deer are found in the Pahranagat and East Pahranagat ranges, which are east of Alamo. Some of the land is roadless and motorized vehicles are not allowed in some areas. Most antelope live near Rachel in the northwest on flats and foothills near farm fields.

  • Roughly 552 square miles

  • 96% public land

  • Elevations vary from about 4,100-8,000 feet on Tikaboo Peak

Low ground is mainly barren with little vegetation. As elevation increases, landscape transitions from cacti and creosote brush to sagebrush and pinyon/juniper woodlands. Grasses and wetland plants are in river bottoms, which are mostly private.

The huntable area is public ground that is reached from desert roads. The Tikaboo Trail near Tikaboo Peak gives access to a roadless area. Roads near Rachel allow hunters to get into pronghorn territory.

  • Listen for flash flood warnings

  • Four-wheel-drive vehicles, sturdy tires are recommended

  • Hike from roads for improved success

  • Tikaboo Peak area is steep and physically demanding

  • Use several roads near Rachel to survey the area

Full services and lodging are available in Alamo and Ash Springs. Limited services with lodging are available in Rachel. Open camping is allowed throughout the unit while improved campsites are available in the Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge.
