On The Ground

Part of the Mojave Desert, this barren area west of Glendale has little vegetation, rocky cliffs and ledges, hidden canyons, little water and intense heat at times. Mule deer do not thrive in this environment, while desert bighorn sheep tend to do well in this condition.

Arrow Canyon Range is home to a healthy population of desert bighorn sheep. Deer are rare or nonexistent. Remote canyons receive little pressure. Hunters who hike into remote canyons improve their chances of taking large rams

Terrain

The valley floor is flat with sandy washes that give way to steep, rocky ledges. Hunters must hike to get into some canyons. Sheep favor the steepest terrain in this unit, most of which is in the Arrow Canyon Range in the northeast.

  • Roughly 320 square miles

  • 68.1% public land

  • Elevations vary from 1,640-5,200 feet

Most of this landscape is barren Mojave Desert with dry lake beds and scattered patches of vegetation. Creosote bushes, white bursage, Joshua trees and various cacti are common.

Roads around Arrow Canyon Range and Battleship Hills lead to jump-off points into roadless areas. The Arrow Canyon Wilderness in the northeast is closed to motor vehicles, as most of Arrow Canyon Wilderness is too rugged and steep for vehicles. The Moapa River Indian Reservation makes up a large part of the unit and is closed to public hunting.

  • Hunters should be in good shape

  • Vehicles should have sturdy tires and four-wheel-drive

  • Hike into remote canyons to see big rams

Hunters can find lodging in Las Vegas, Logandale and Mesquite. Limited services are available in Moapa and Glendale. Primitive camping is allowed throughout the unit.
