On The Ground
About 50 miles northeast of Las Vegas, the Meadow Valley Mountains are in this sprawling Mojave Desert unit. The harsh climate, barren desert and steep cliffs are better for desert bighorn sheep than deer.
Plan to for a long hike. Sheep are commonly seen near guzzlers. Does and small bucks are occasionally seen north of Moapa in Meadow Valley Wash.
Terrain
The valley floor is flat with sandy washes that give way to steep, rocky ledges. Isolated canyons can be reached by foot.
Roughly 350 square miles
90% public land
Elevations vary from 1,600 to 5,500 feet in the Meadow Valley Range
Vegetation
Most of the landscape is barren Mojave Desert with dry lake beds and vegetation. Creosote brush, white bursage, Joshua trees and cacti are common. Grasses and tamarisk shrubs grow in parts of Meadow Valley Wash.
Access
Access to the interior of the Meadow Valley Mountains is limited. Hunters should be conditioned for hiking. Paved and graded county roads are on the perimeter, including Kane Springs Road, which allows vehicle access on the west side of the range and County Road 423 allows access on the east side. Much of the terrain is in Mountain Valley Mountains Wilderness.
Hunters need four-wheel-drive vehicles with sturdy tires
Remote canyons hold rams
Hunters can reach some hunting areas by riding ATVs
ATVs can climb up some washes that are not marked on maps
Camping and Lodging
Full services and lodging are available in Las Vegas, Logandale and Mesquite. Glendale Motel is in Moapa. Primitive camping is allowed throughout the unit.
