Elk and antelope are found here. Archery, muzzleloader and high-power rifle hunters may hunt in multiple units.

Water sources are invaluable during early seasons and can be excellent starting location for any hunt.

The southern end of the unit is the outer limit of the Mojave Desert with barren landscape and small, rocky ranges. The terrain transitions to high desert near Elgin and continues through the north end of the unit. Plenty of vegetation, water and multiple mountain ranges create prime deer and elk habitat.

The southern part of the unit is barren Mojave Desert landscape consisting of dry lake beds and patches vegetation. Creosote brush, Joshua trees and various cacti are common. The central and northern parts of the unit are high desert, which is covered in various grasses, sagebrush, pinyon pines and junipers. Pockets of aspens and pines are at higher elevations near Ella, Jack’s and Sawmill Mountains.

Good access in most of the unit with paved, graded and four-wheel-drive roads. Rainbow Canyon is the primary route. Parts of the unit are designated wilderness, where motorized travel is banned. No hunting is allowed in Beaver Dam State Park. The only private ground is associated with agriculture and does not influence hunter access. Hunters must hike to reach some high country.

Full services and lodging are available in Caliente, Panaca and Pioche. Primitive camping is allowed throughout the unit. Improved camping is available at Beaver Dam State Park, Eagle Valley Reservoir and Echo Canyon State Park.
