On The Ground

Low tag numbers, good genetics and a healthy deer herd make for a quality hunt and a chance at a great buck. Elk and antelope can be found in the unit, but better options are available. Quality Desert bighorn sheep hunting is found in the Delamar and Pahroc Ranges.

Great deer unit with trophy potential and high deer numbers. Water sources are helpful during the early seasons for all species. Elk hunt includes Unit 242, which produce big bulls every year. Antelope hunting includes Units 221-223 providing plenty of good hunting area.

Terrain

The southern end of the unit the Mojave Desert, with sandy washes and rocky ridges with steep canyons. The area transitions to high desert near the middle of the unit and continues to the northern boundary. Plenty of vegetation, water and multiple mountain ranges offer quality hunts for all species.

  • Roughly 850 square miles

  • 99.6% public land

  • Elevations vary from 3,000-7,800 feet

Creosote Bush, Joshua trees and various cacti are most common. The central and northern portion of the unit is high desert, which is covered by various grasses, sagebrush and pinyon/juniper. Pockets of aspens and pines can be found at higher elevations.

Access is good for the majority of the unit with paved, graded and four-wheel-drive roads available. Parts of the unit are designated wilderness area where motorized travel is banned. The only private ground is associated with agriculture in the low foothills and does not influence hunter access. Hunters must hike to reach high country.

  • Four-wheel-drive vehicles are recommended

  • Rainbow Canyon Road and Kane Springs Road provide access into prime hunting area

Full services and lodging are available in Alamo, Caliente, Panaca and Pioche. Primitive camping is allowed throughout the unit. Improved camping is available at Beaver Dam State Park, Eagle Valley reservoir and Echo Canyon State Park.
