On The Ground

The vast majority of this unit is public. The west side is mainly desert mountain ranges with limited natural water sources and wildlife guzzlers while the east side holds the Bristol and Highland mountain ranges.

Great for late-season deer hunting. Bucks migrate into this unit, allowing hunters to look at a lot of bucks as they check does before the rut. Most deer are in the north. Good antelope hunting in the desert valley.

Terrain

Mostly desert terrain, the eastern part of Unit 223 features the rocky North Pahroc Mountains with few natural water sources. The western mountain ranges, Bristol and Highland typically have deer and elk terrain with natural and artificial water sources.

  • Roughly 1,128 square miles

  • 98.5% public land

  • Elevations mostly 5,500-9,000 feet

Mostly pinyon pines, junipers, mahogany and sagebrush at lower to middle elevations, grassy meadows, spruce and mahogany at the higher elevations of the eastern mountains.

Plenty of public roads and four-wheel-drive trails can take you to a starting point in any part of this unit. Private land does not significantly impact access of this unit except that mining companies control the north part of the Bristol Range. Motorized travel prohibited in some areas.

  • Stay on marked roads

  • Highway 93 allows for most access into hunting grounds

  • Use maps to stay off of mining property

  • Well groomed county and powerline roads

  • Roads to almost all hunting grounds

Pioche is the best place for hunters to stay when hunting the eastern part of this unit. The town is centrally located from north to south and has great access into hunting areas. The hunter-friendly Overland Hotel and Saloon has good parking for pickups. Alamo is a good place for lodging at the southeastern tip of the unit.
